Hymenolobium elatum Ducke.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: light yellowish-brown heartwood, distinct from pale brown sapwood. Fibrous aspect accentuated on the tangential face, due to the prominence of the axial parenchyma, fibers and vascular lines. Interlocked grain, coarse texture, absent shine and imperceptible odor.

DENSITY: medium density wood, with density at 12% moisture of 710 kg/m3 for H. petraeum and 770 kg/m3 for H. modestum and green density of 1,190 kg/m3 for both species.

DRYING: very fast in the oven, showing a slight tendency to twisting and bending, in drying program 4.

WORKABILITY: easy to work with. Regular to good finish on planer, lathe and drill.

DURABILITY: heartwood very durable to durable when exposed to white and brown rot fungi, and moderately resistant to marine borers. Resistant to dry wood termites.

PRESERVATION: sapwood very easy and heartwood difficult to preserve with creosote and CCA-A, under pressure treatment.

USES: civil construction, furniture and others.
